Post subject:  Home/Away wins on lists.

The lists are done, but I just looked at an SS1 turnsheet and realised that I've missed out all the 'Consecutive Home Wins' stuff etc. Since the lists are already a bit hefty, I don't want to add too much. I've done a separate 'stats' page for people who want to see every nitty-gritty detail, but I can't add them to each turnsheet as they're huge and take up way too much memory/bandwidth. So the lists on the turns will be 'at a glance' type lists (e.g top 10, top 50 etc) but if you want to see every detail for every team, there's a separate page that you can load in and look at (I might limit this if it gets used a lot as it's still heavy on bandwidth).

Anyway, since I missed out the home/away records, I'm just wondering which you consider important. Some seem a bit boring on the SS1 turns, e.g 'Since last home draw'. Would it be ok to just have the important ones, such as 'Consecutive wins/draws/losses' at home and away? Or do you also want 'Since last home/way win/draw/loss'? Maybe the draws aren't important at least? It's no big deal, I can add as many as I want and they won't make much difference to the main turns anyway, but no point clogging them up with boring stats.

My usual standard reply. Rather have too many than too few stats but you already know that so I'm no help here really :)

I think some of the draw ones are actually 'bad', i.e 'Since last away draw', because it seems like a waste of space. But that'll only save like 2 categories, because 'Consecutive W/D/L at H/A' (that's 6) all seem worthwhile and 'Since Last W/L at H/A' (another 4) seem worthwhile too. It's the draws that sound useless to me, although consecutive away draws seems like quite a good one.

Doesn't sound useless to me. :)

Fine by me I'm not a stats fan, but will go along with everyone

Due to the excessive memory and space, I'm leaving out H/A records for now. If people really want them later, they can be added. I'm going to have to start to think about the memory issue because it becomes a real issue when downloading pages.

Spend a fortune on having multiple large servers

It's probably not really an issue, it's just that I have about 20 categories already and I can think of 22 more just for the H/A records (WDLFA, Cons WDL and Since WDL for each). It seems a bit wrong to have over half of the records consist of home away records and they don't seem important enough. I did add 4 records for penalty shoot-outs because those do seem important (or at least interesting).

PHP uses 84 bytes per value in an array, which is insane when you have 512 teams, 20 sets of records and so far 36 values per record. So that's 720 values, which themselves are probably 8-byte values. Actually it doesn't add up to much on a modern computer, but once it's in memory it does and I'm limited to 1GB in memory at once. Still not really an issue. Also, it doesn't matter much when the tables are only expanding downwards, but I feel like 22 H/A records will be a huge blob of uninteresting table.

I could just store WDLFA for each, so that's 10 more. At least you'll have totals for your home and away records that way.

I'm 'probably' going to have to expand my bandwidth payments either way, even just for testing. I'm not sure how much it eats into my bandwidth but my suspicion is - a LOT!

Meh, as a compromise, I'm going to do consecutives only for now, so that's 6 (Consecutive wins/draws/losses at home/away).
