I'm talking irl football here. Say a player shoots and it's immediately charged down by a defender (not the GK), but it was clearly on target up to that point, would it count as a shot on target in the official stats?

I'm just wondering because I'm not sure how many shots there would actually be in a typical game. I'm guessing that the average would be about 10 off and 5 on but would that mean that the 5 on target were all saved by the keeper, or would some be charged down by defenders? Trying to work out what a realistic amount of saves a goalkeeper would make... something like 50% (assuming equal skill)?

Any shot that would be on target (on target is any shot that would go INSIDE the frame of the goal, not hitting the woodwork) is considered on target, be it saved by the keeper, blocked by an opponent or hitting one's own players.

So in your example, immediately charged down is counted as on target as long as the ball would have gone between the frame of the goal.

As to averages of saves, shots on target etc it would vary depending on the quality of the teams involved. My advice would just be to look on the bbc, sporting life or similar at breakdowns of games to get an idea of the average number of saves, shots on and off target etc, anything any of us claim will be anecdotal based on the teams we watch, be it live or on tv. :)

One trap to avoid when writing a football match engine (something I found out decades ago and actually saw in some earlier games) is that everything must be relative to the other team and not flat-based numbers. For example, you don't say 'Chance of it being on target is dependent on his shooting level', otherwise terrible teams never score (even against each other, you just get endless 0-0's, which wouldn't actually happen... if anything, terrible team v terrible team usually ends up like 8-7). The better way is to assume that players have an equal chance of the ball being on target and better players are actually focusing on beating the keeper (it actually happens in football, sometimes annoyingly. At Sunday morning level, you just try to hit the goal but at pro level they're trying to get the ball just inside the post).

So the amount of shots on target would be relatively equal, as would the number of goals assuming that the shooters and goalkeepers are equally good / bad. If it's a great shooter against a terrible goalkeeper, in real life the shooter would adapt and just start tapping it in but my method will still work, because if I'm assuming that a good keeper stops ~50% of the shots, the bad keeper will stop more like ~1% so he'll still score more goals.

It's more intuitive when it comes to something like tackling because it's just player A v player B.

Yep, that's why I avoided the good v bad players bit, because I knew you would have a far better grasp on balancing that than anyone else would and just kept it to the "what constitutes a shot on target" aspect and pointed you towards places you can get the breakdown of real matches if you want a guide to the number of shots in a match. :)

I'm guessing that in real football it's quite hard to know if a shot is actually on target (i.e if the shot is blocked immediately after it's left the player's foot), but that won't be a problem for the computer. irl they probably just guess.

Not these days. Opta use computers for all the stats as all games have coverage these days (at least most of the upper levels of football). Certainly no guessing going on !

Oh yeah they've got all that hawk-eye stuff nowadays. So I'm in no danger of being 'over-accurate'.

Got the 37-37 score-lines down to 18-17, things are going well. Might leave it at that, this way, Tolbury might score!

Sounds highly unrealistic if that is going to happen
